The HSE would not allow you run a food business if there was peat in your water. Seriously, that's the most ridiculous thing I've read in a while and how the kind of rumours that hurt peoples livelihood start.

Smokiness could come from many things
Peat filtered water is perfectly safe to drink, but either way there's a smokiness in several of their beers and if it's not the water that suggests fermentation issues.

I've never had that taste. In fairness, I mostly have their brown ale (which is great). The pale, which I had again recently, is fine but a bit bland. Definitely no smoke- but not doing much of anything really
