No, wait - "game" as in I'm on for discussing what's justifiable.
No way I'm paying that for a 3.7% APA! (Especially when there's a fridge full of Dead Pony Club cans next to it.)

So, if you started counting backwards, 50c at a time, would you reach an acceptable price? The same price as the Dead Pony Club cans, maybe?

I know a trick question when I see one, mister!

Dead Pony Club cans probably [i:2769ou83]are[/i:2769ou83] a fiver each at ATG, and for an ounce or two less than 2/3 a pint.

However, Dead Pony Club is a big, fresh (because it's canned) dose of Citra and Simcoe.

Meanwhile, ATG tweeted on July 18[/url:2769ou83] that they'd just tapped the Terminal. I'm not saying it's the same keg for the past 3 weeks, but at that price I'm not confident that it's turned over, either.

Tap beer might not be as fresh, but it's cheaper than bottles: that's the tradeoff.
If it's neither fresh nor cheap, why am I bothering?

Well indeed. And there's worse: Dublin's beer specialists seem to have developed a habit of serving American seasonal beers out of season. Who is buying Sierra Nevada Celebration in July, and do we need to stage an intervention?

In again Friday, and my mistake - it was actually a *fiver* for 2/3 a pint of session ale.

"TheBeerNut":15r42n9b wrote: Agree with all of that and very much think discussing price should be on the agenda and is absolutely what this forum is for.

So, let's go with €7.10 not being justifiable. What number is justifiable and why?[/quote:15r42n9b]

OK, I'm game.

Justifiable for me is a combination of strength, style, quality, accessibility, freshness, and scarcity.

Here's 5 beers that are €5 a bottle at Drinkstore that I would pay for:
Rochefort 10
Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast
Red Willow Ageless
Thornbridge St Petersburg
Sierra Nevada Hoptimum

And here's 5 beers that are €5 a bottle I wouldn't pay for:
Schneider Weisse Aventinus Weizen Eisbock
Mikkeller Tomahawk Single Hop IPA
Red Willow Feckless
Bristol Beer Factory Milk Stout
Flying Dog Horn Dog[/quote:15r42n9b]
interested in your justification on a few of those

At the end of the day I accept that I am going to sometimes dig a little deeper for the sort of products we are talking about, that the cost of manafacturing and doing business in Ireland is high, and that sometimes, yes, there is a mark-up in a pub like ATG that appears to only be attributable to some intangible in the aether.

Personally I think it probably [i:27l07mq9]is[/i:27l07mq9] worth paying a little over the odds to try a guest beer that I might not otherwise ever taste again (hypothetically, even someone on a tight budget might think the same - maybe the reason they're treating themselves to a trip to the pub is to try something different to what their standard fare from the off-licence is?).

I presume that ATG is shifting beer at these prices - or at least, as long as the prices remain steady or rising, we will know they are. They are a business, after all, not a co-op or public service. If enough people did start going elsewhere or buying from the lower-priced end of the menu then they'd presumably respond to that too, eventually.
