True, but in Joe Publics mind if it's a beer thats not for sale, it's 'home brew' and probably usually a kit and kilo in the bath, like many of them tried in college. It invariably has negative conutations.

If it's a beer for sale made by a small non-mainstream brewer I think they would normally refer to it as "Microbrew".

The phrase "Craft brewer" or "Craft beer" is something that probably sits uneasily in their head as belonging to the "organic hippies" who sell their garden vegetables in farmers markets.

Oh I agree, but it can lead people to assume the brewer is commercial, and that seems to have happened with the program.

[quote:31yywhj0]The subject of independent craft brewing and amateur craft brewers would make good TV for an Irish program.

Any of you got contacts in the media that could be approached to make a show of this type? s[/quote:31yywhj0]

There have been 2 threads started in the general chat looking for people with a bit of irish to look at homebrewing[url:31yywhj0]http://www.beoir.org/community/viewtopic.php?t=2006[/url:31yywhj0]

Not sure if anyone has much Irish or has been in contact but there's a contact.

Yes, I was on a programme called Highly Recommended. Unfortunately it focused on the money saving aspect, so it was talking about kit and kilo brewing.

I have no media contacts though. They found me through the power of Google.

I think lack of Irish is the problem here.

On terminology:

People who do something as a hobby, which others do professionally, are called amateurs. You can be an amateur musician, an amateur poet, an amateur car mechanic, why must an amateur brewer be called a homebrewer?

The term homebrewer means kit and kilo in most peoples minds. They all know someone who fermented a budget lager kit in the hotpress and think that is what you are doing if you use that term.

I never describe myself as a homebrewer to anyone who does not already know about the hobby. Amateur brewer is a perfectly accurate term and often leads to people asking questions as to how this is different from homebrew. I am happy to answer such questions.

My dad has been looking for decent beer and wanted to get the names of the lads who made Red Diesel etc off me so he could know where to buy them. He was disappointed when I told him ye werent commercial microbrewers, but homebrewers

It has also been pointed out to me that the winning of awards by [i:3uyd21ar]two[/i:3uyd21ar] fake homebrewers could be the beginnings of another BBC scandal, like the Blue Peter Kitten Affair[/url:3uyd21ar].[/quote:3uyd21ar]

I don't think that's a problem really - it's only the faces that were wrong; the beer was genuinely brewed at home by non-professionally trained brewers. We were just the mouthpieces
