Clubs don't need regular liquor licences as they are "redistributing the members' assets". i.e. the drink was bought with membership money so it belongs to the members. And for that reason they can't serve a non-member. BUT, they can serve a member who in turn can give his personal beer to someone who is a non-member. Hence as a non-member you're supposed to sign the register on entry, giving the member's name you are with.

For this to be legal it has to be a registered club.

I don't frequent many sporting clubs (can you tell? <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->) but my local GAA club always has a member on the door making sure people sign in.

Weren't the VFA looking to stop clubs that rented out functions halls with access to the club bar. as they were not public bars?

This is all quite interesting[/quote:15ssage9]

I will stand corrected, but my understanding was (from my local cricket club) that technically they aren't public bars, but rather bars for members. Not that I've ever seen anyone refused a drink due to lack of membership card (such as visiting teams, family and the occasional drop in) but wouldn't that change the category of licence?[/quote:15ssage9]

Indeed Mr Sandwich!

They are some sort of category of private members licensed premises that are not public!

But so are the Golf Clubs!!

Hi Will, did you not say the golf club also had a hotel? Hence it's public...
