Irish Craft Beer recommendations 14 years 8 months ago #1

Good morning/afternoon folks,
I am almost embarrassed to say I am very out of touch with Craft Beer in Ireland. I was born and raised in Donegal (letterkenny), but for the past 11 years I have been living in Washington DC.

I've been homebrewing for about 5 years, and drinking craft beer almost since I got here. It's a beer renaissance at the minute.

Anyway, I'm going to be home for a fortnight 2 weeks from tomorrow. I will mainly be in the home area (Donegal, wife's home area Fermanagh, and also in Cavan for a wedding). What are the options, either from the off license or in pubs.

What Irish craft beers should I make a point of trying to get when I get home, and how available is craft beer in bars now?

Also trying to get a sixpack of my Vanilla Whiskey Porter safely home, so fingers crossed that I don't ruin the wedding suit in transit.

Cheers folks

If you poke around the site there is a list or two of pubs and shops selling craft beer. I'm not too sure about the area you are hitting but I'd say a supermarket may be AA good as it gets for Irish craft beer.

If you are flying in to Dublin you certainly have a great chance of finding good beer either in a pub or a shop. It may be an idea to stock up on your way up as the last time I was in Donegal it was a craftbeer desert!

Enjoy!

I looked in the pub thread, and saw ballyshannon (about 40 minutes drive, which doesn't mix with drinking at all) and not much else.

Won't have much time in Dublin, but I'll be back again in October and will only be in Dublin, so will try some spots there then.

What Irish Craft Beers are available at most supermarkets do you recommend I pick up?

Cavan I'm afraid isn't kind to Craft Beer aficionados (unless you brew your own). As far as I know, Tesco is the only place (in Cavan town) that sells Irish Craft beer- it recently stocked the O'Hara's range (Red, Stout, Curim and IPA).

Inishmacsaint Brewing is based in Fermanagh and I believe its available in the off-licence in Blakes in Derrylin.

Slim pickings.

Your best best might be to visit <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.drinkstore.ie">www.drinkstore.ie and have a few craft beers delivered and waiting for you when you get here.

Then when you make it to Dublin you can try the interesting Keg/Cask offerings. (Metalman & Trouble Brewing especially)

Oh and even if you don't have much time in Dublin, if you have any sort of time at the airport, in Terminal 2 there is a pub with Irish craft beers available.
