Recommendations for Dusseldorf & St. John's, Newfoundlan 14 years 8 months ago #19

I was in Dusseldorf for a Stags last year, and by far and away the nicest Altbier I had was in a place on Bolkerstraße just across the road and down a bit from the church on the same street. 99% positive it was called Frankenheim Alt.

I didn't get a chance to try too many unfortunately as it's difficult to get a group of Irish lads to drink in a bar that only serves that "weird stuff" <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->

What do you mean "weird stuff"?? -Alt bier? You should've told them it is like a German version of Smithwicks, except it actually tastes good.

All the Dusseldorf alt beers were VERY similar, just slight variations in color and malt vs. hoppy balance. The Pinkus Muller, Munster Alt beer was considerably lighter, drier, and more bitter than it's Dusseldorf cousins, though. (more refreshing, for sure; I had to do a double-take and make sure it was the alt beer I was drinking)

"Weird stuff" as in not your usual macro lager. You know how some people are just programmed to not try anything different.

I only tried some Alt beers in 2 bars, one I can't remember the name but I wasn't too impressed with it, it had a flat bitterness to it. The other one that I tried was the Frankenheim Alt which was beautiful. It had a real balanced flavour, not too sweet, not too bitter, and with a lovely hoppy flavour. I actually picked up a bottle of it in Drinkstore on Friday but it wasn't the same as I remembered, it had that flat bitterness that I'm not a huge fan of.

Dying to Check out St Johns. I'm back in Dublin in 3 weeks for 10 days, it i cant get work in those 10 days I'm thinking of moving to St Johns. I'd be very surprsed if they had much in the line of good beers there though.

Nigel, thanks for the recommendations. I had beers from all 3 Newfoundland micros but Yellowbelly's is by far the best. I actually sat down next to the brewer at lunch time today and had a chat - he lived in Dublin for 4 years! (Liam, the former Dublin Brewing Company brewer.)

They have a great hoppy stout and a fantastic pale ale that uses 5 hops blended together which gives it an almost tropical Citra/NZ hop flavor.

Yellowbelly's food is always fantastic and WAY better priced that some places just a few doors down. Great place.

I also got to do a tour of the Quidi Vidi brewery today. (3 eagles flying around outside the brewery the whole time made for a special and unique brewery tour.) I tried each of their regular beers while here and am bringing back a few of their iceberg beer that's brewed with melted iceberg water. (The water is SUPER soft and it really makes a really easy drinking light lager. (Although it's expensive because the water costs them $0.70/liter and the empty blue glass bottles that it's packaged in cost about the same.)

Definitely check out Zum Uerige in Dusseldorf. It's the only bar I've ever been in where the waiter brings your group a beer each without anyone even ordering.
