Zum Uerige definitely had the best location and best atmosphere and was tied for best alt bier, in my opinion.

There's quite a few places in that part of Germany that will keep bringing you beer once you order ONE, though. (Some of the Kolsch house in Cologne keep bringing the Kolsch until you cry uncle; although they're not very strong and they come in tiny 0.3L glasses so it takes a good long while before that happens.)

I remember them being tiny, but that's even more tiny that I thought! (Although you do get 5 or 6 at a time...)

My new "drink responsibly beer" is Jarl, for sure. There's no way you could pack more bitterness and hoppy goodness into 3.6% ABV. -It's an incredibly delicious little beer but it seems quite expensive when the ABV is factored in.

I like that notion, we were told that you would be constantly served beer until you put your beer mat over the top of your glass to signal you wanted to settle up.

The thing I found funny about Uerige was that we sat down and about 10 seconds later the waiter slapped 3 Alt biers down in front of us, left a tab and then walked away without saying a word. Funny that he assumed we all wanted beer.

I also like they way they keep track of your tab - wax marks on your beer coaster.

-Does anyone know if the wooden alt beer casks are just wooden on the outside or if they're also wooden on the inside? I looked as closely as I could and my best guess is that they're either coated stainless with the wood over the outside for looks or they're plastic with the wood over the outside for looks but I couldn't tell definitively.

However, I understand the beer spends very little time in them. It's all in stainless tanks round the back and when a barrel is empty it gets refilled from these and goes straight back out onto the counter again.
