Do breweries need to do more? 14 years 3 weeks ago #19

CDow

Maybe you should take the commercial risk so ?
Offer to provide the setup costs to bars , and take a commission on sales from micros .

You could become the beer baron of Limerick .

Maybe they could set up some sort of trade organisation that looks after their interests, is a point of contact, lobbies on their behalf, attends tradeshows (esp bord bia ones abroad), etc. A small office and probably 2 staff would suffice at a price of say €10k per annum on average per brewer - is this too cost prohibitive?

At the very least they need to come together and form some sort of trade group between them IMO

Edit: Maybe they could organise their own 'group buys' of malt and hops too <!-- s:mrgreen: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_mrgreen.gif" alt="" title="Mr. Green" /><!-- s:mrgreen: -->[/quote:1awe1nwe]

There's a proven danger in that model .

Reference the Waterford and Kilkenny area beer bottling and packaging cooperative that killed the breweries around there in the 70's or 80's ( John will know )

But there is perhaps scope for something like what you're talking about in the industry .

I think we need about 10 more breweries first though .

Slightly off topic but if there is site development happening along those lines, can we add the ability to hover over a post title and get a 2 line preview a la other forums?

Also, can links in forums auto open in a new tab rather than taking you away from this site?

Not questioning your local knowledge but isn't that around the period that all small brewers and distillers went under in the UK & ROI? Or can this be attributed directly to said co-op?

I have enough trouble running my own business and taking my own commercial risk.

If you want to discuss this in an adult fashion then fine, if you want to make smart ass suggestions then pick another victim.

I honestly don't know , but It was suggested that it made them a more direct target for direct takeover , as in the Co-op got bought , scuppering the breweries rather than each Brewery having to be bought . There was some discussion here on it before , but not sure where .

CDow , apologies if my directness offended you , but to be fair you are trying to tell other people how to conduct their business , and bandying about terms like " Shooting themselves in the foot " and accusing them of not doing enough .
And when some simple facts about the practicalities are presented to you , and offered as possible explanation as to why what you expected to happen didn't happen , for commercial reasons , you start to tell me I'm looking at things with a soft focus and romanticising .

Sorry bud , if you think I'm attacking you . I'm not . If you do have the capital available , and you obviously see a market , you should go for it .

I wish I had the Capital.
