Drinking one of these right now that made it's way out from the inside. I'm hesitant to compare it to any other Irish Pale Ale, but it tastes OK and has hop and malt flavours that you don't expect or get with Smithwicks. You can tell the accountants have had their input though as it falls a good way short on the overall delivery.
I understand this is as far from a craft production as is possible, but I think this could do good things to promote choice. There are thousands of intransigents who will see this, and automatically try it with a more open mind as it has the Smithwicks brand and it might just open their mind to try other Irish Pale Ales. If it does well, it might make it easier for other Irish Pale Ale producers to get their product into Irish pubs.
I would love to drink craft, drink local, but there is close to zero craft beer choice in Navan and given this fact, and until that changes, I would definitely choose this over the standard other seven taps you're faced with everytime you go out somewhere local. (And if the Galway Hooker boys are reading this, the bar owner in Navan who's number I gave you is still waiting for your call!)
